Raheem Sterling, Liverpool
The 17-year-old has been a revelation since Brendan Rodgers gave him a
run of games in the Anfield club’s starting XI. It was former boss Kenny
Dalglish that gave Sterling his first chance in the side, but the
arrival of Rodgers in the summer has signalled greater opportunities for
the Reds’ more impressive academy talents. Sterling scored his first
goal at the weekend and has been a problem for most every team he has
faced this season – he looks certain to be a fantastic player.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arsenal
‘The Ox’ is not really a promising teen as such, because he is
already an established first team player at the Gunners and an England
regular. But it is easy to forget that he has only just turned 19 and
only became a regular under Wenger midway through last season.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has improved vastly since signing from Southampton,
becoming more stickily built and developing his interchange play to
ready him for the central midfield role Wenger has earmarked him for. He
is bound to be a leading light in the
Premier League for years to come
Nick Powell, Manchester United
Signed from Crewe in the summer, Powell has already been labelled the
‘next Paul Scholes’
after impressing during the few cameos he has made so far. One of these
did see him score a Scholes-esque goal, dropping a shoulder inside
Wigan centre-back Steven Caldwell before slamming the ball home from the
edge of the area. Powell is tall, strong and looks to be extremely
talented on the ball, with a penchant for spectacular goals. Sir Alex
Ferguson will likely use him sparingly at first, but it won’t be in the
distant future when before Powell proves he deserves a starting XI spot.
Lucas Piazon, Chelsea
This 18-year-old Brazilian was acquired by the Stamford Bridge club last
year from the Sao Paulo academy and has made rapid progress up through
the Chelsea youth ranks since arriving. He has a similar playing style
to his compatriot and new team-mate Oscar, though he operates in a more
advanced position. Dribbling, passing, shooting, Piazon is adept at all
and it is no surprise he has been hovering around the first team for the
past few months. A very talented youngster that will be ready for first
team action soon and has the attributes to become a star.
Serge Gnabry, Arsenal
Not many people other than those taking interest in Arsenal under-21s
and under-18s will have known much about the 17-year-old Arsenal signed
from Bundesliga side Stuttgart last year before this week, but Gnabry
has been exciting many people in the Gunners’ set-up since he arrived.
There were glimpses of what he could do in the loss to Schalke 04 on
Wednesday night and he has impressed Wenger so much, that the Frenchman
is reportedly feeling less concerned
about the prospect of Theo Walcott leaving. Fantastic pace, finishing
ability and a willingness to take on defender, Gnabry has the tools to
become a fearsome opponent in the Premier League and Wenger appears
ready to give him his chance
